The IhrigArt collection is being preserved and catalogued at my studio in Stratford, Ontario Canada.  Along with researching each piece I am photographing the art and in some cases making limited edition prints for sale.  Robert Ihrig was always looking at art from a new perspective.  He loved to mix his mediums.  He was well known for cutting up pieces of art and rearranging them, adding paint, paper, illustrations and even re-photographing them.

As a result of inspiration from my Uncle Bob, I am taking the liberty of digitally rearranging some of his art to create the Digital IhrigArt collection which will be in future galleries. For the time being I would like the world to experience the art of Robert Ihrig in it’s original form.

If you are in Stratford please call and arrange a private viewing at the studio.

Robert Ihrig was a prolific artist.  He died in 2005 leaving behind a body of work that encompasses paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, books, blueprints,

theatre designs, illustrations, mixed media, etchings, silkscreens, lithographs, films, and notebooks with plans for screenplays, animated films, plays and exhibits.  The art is from as early as 1950 and continues through 2004.

Bob exhibited and was involved with many, many art shows, galleries, museums, collectives, art associations and alliances.   He has permanent pieces at Michigan State University, The Stratford Festival and Gallery Stratford to name a few.

I am Karen, the niece of Robert Ihrig.

When Bob died in 2005

he left me in charge of his personal art collection.  Bob and I talked often of  cataloguing his drawers full of art and putting it on the web for sale.  Then we would say, “yeah, let’s do that sometime but today let’s go to lunch”.  He was an avid art collector, especially of Canadian artists and had grown tired of his own art.  We went to art shows weekly.

The 1st step after his death was to put together a retrospective of his 40+ years of work at the Gallery he founded 40 years earlier, Gallery Stratford, originally called Rothmans Art Gallery.  A show of this caliber required putting the word out near and far to individuals, galleries and corporations who had acquired his art.  That was one aspect of putting together the show.  The other aspect was sorting through the massive amount of paintings, drawings and photographs that had laid dormant in those drawers and boxes for so long.

I had always been inspired by Bob’s art.  I grew up with it in our home, his studio and throughout Stratford.  I have always been inspired by the artists in my family and of the times.  Now I was inundated daily by all of Bob’s art and I had the job of editing through much of it rather quickly for the upcoming Ihrig retrospective.  I was now entering into the personal journey of Robert Ihrig.  It changed my life.

The Robert E. Ihrig Retrospective at Gallery Stratford, in Ontario, Canada in 2007 was the unveiling of the large body of work produced by Bob.   I have now made IhrigArt available to the world.  This web site/gallery represents a small bit of what I am uncovering.  It is very much a ‘period piece’ as you will see.

The galleries will be updated often with additional works as well as more information and stories about Bob.
